Why do my nails keep chipping and splitting?

My nails have always been pretty weak, and I used to work with my hands alot so I never really gave them a chance to grow. But now that I have an office job I was able to get them to grow out a bit to a classy length which I thought looked really nice, but that lasted for about 4.5 weeks and now they are worse then they have ever been. I can't get them to grow without splitting horitonally- layers come off, making them really thin and sharp. My thumb nails also break at the nail bed, much farther then I have EVER cut them and it often hurts (I have used super glue when It was really painful)

I take a calcium, vitamin e, vitamin B, fish oil and vitamin c every morning. I also have been putting on a sally hansen product that is a double duty- base coat and top coat, just to give them some strength.

Is there anything else I can do to get them to grow without splitting?

Could cheap nail polish do this to my nails?

I was putting on sally hansen nail polish and then I switched to a different color made by some unknown company- could that have an effect on my nails?

thanks for your help! Why do my nails keep chipping and splitting?
I didn't know this until i visited my doctors office but your nails reveal a lot about your health. I saw one of those health posters pinned up and weak nails and a bunch of different symptoms mean different things, go get checked up :). Luck! x]Why do my nails keep chipping and splitting?
I would get it checked if I were u.

My nails are really healthy but ive always had a problem with splits on the sides?

when i get the splits im forced clip my nail = ( how can i keep them from splittingMy nails are really healthy but ive always had a problem with splits on the sides?
Soak them in mineral oil.My nails are really healthy but ive always had a problem with splits on the sides?
Same is mine do one things file them.
That usually happens when you are filing your nails in both directions, when you use a nail file you have to make sure that you only file in one direction, usually away from you. Otherwise your nails are highly likely to split. Hope that helps.
cut them straight across, never pointed

Nails nails nails... THEY WONT STOP SPLITTING.?

My nails used to be fine but now they keep splitting. It looks like they are layered. Anything i can use arounf the house to fix them up without buying anything because im a bit strapped for cahs at the moment.Nails nails nails... THEY WONT STOP SPLITTING.?
YOu need more iron in your diet also i hear cod liver oil works really good, you can get them in capsules, one a day!!Nails nails nails... THEY WONT STOP SPLITTING.?
Get a nail file and file the base off your nail until smooth and file your nail into a oval shape because this is the toughest most long lasting shape your nails can be square is ok deffo dont have pointed nail shape they will split and break very easily. And get a nail stenghioner (can get cheap ones) and apply once a day.
Try keeping them trim and allow them to grow nice and strong - the longer they are, the more chance they'll split.

You can get strengthening nail polishes for very little money - you just need to know where to look. If you know a place where you can get discount nail polish by good brands, have a look there (could be a pharmacy/drugstore, maybe even a supermarket or little bits and bobs shop). I've got some that didn't cost more than 拢2.

Look here - basically says you can use olive oil to strengthen your nails.

Either get a $3 bottle of nail hardener from Sally's or a $4 bottle of biotin pills. The biotin will strengthen the regrowth.
you need more calcium.

my used to do the same thing, i started drinking more milk and taking calcium pills, and now they're just fine :]]
Put on a silk wrap
Have you been drinking too much pop. You need calcium i your bones. Drink lots of milk and eat cheese and yogurts.

  • My nails keep breaking/splitting?

um, my nails arent like really long or something. it's not too short though, and they are so soft that when i pinch something with the tips of my fingernails, they just break and split. sometimes the nails split like 2 layers, the outer surface just breaks. it's so irritating. please tell me why? um, please dont suggest to me things like using some nail protecting stuff you buy in the market. i wouldnt use them.. just, um, why is this happening? protein defficiency or what?!My nails keep breaking/splitting?
You may have a lack of keratin which is important for healthy hair and nails. It's likely that your diet is lacking in some substances or you have naturally low levels. I would recommend trying Blackmores Hair and Nail vitamins - will take a few weeks to see improvements. Also, treat the nail itself with Dr LeWinn's Revitanail treatment. If it doesn't improve after that, maybe check with your doctor for any deficiencies? Hope that helps :)My nails keep breaking/splitting?
It is more than likely your diet. More protein would help, and for whatever reason I find that chicken in particular helped me. I use to bit my nails a lot and took a while to get them in order without chipping every second and found that they grew fastest, strongest when I had a lot of chicken. If you are a vegetarian and don't eat meat try heavy nuts like cashews. Also woudl help to moisturize your hands, try vaseline hand %26amp; nail hand cream, if you use your hands a lot cleaning or doing dishes.
you should find a Cosmotologist or nail tech that sells a product called NailTek Hydration II. i have the same problem and use this - it works really well! because it is made for the professional trade, it is a bit more expensive, but it works better than anything i tried from a discount store. give it a shot if you can.
Well, I could be not drinking enough milk maybe? Or like, not a good balance of whatever you're eating.

But if you really want that to stop,

get some good nail polish remover and soak your finger tips in them every now and then. It'll help them to be stronger- that, and clear nail polish, if you don't want to paint your nails a different color.
i believe some people just have soft nails. i have incredibly soft nails. to the point where if i put polish on, when i shower it actually peels off! i always have to keep mine short because they'll break if i don't. if i want long nails, i invest in acrylics but i have to have them removed when i'm done because trying to take them off myself rips layers off!
There isnt really a reason unless you have had fake nails on a few times beacuase having them makes your nails thinner and weak. I know you said dont suggest anything but i do recommend sally henson strong nails is arounf 拢4.50 but is worth it, its like a clear pink but doesnt come out any colour. it drys quick and when its dry it doesnt shine and just look like your normal nail. In any store e.g superdrug, asda tesco etc.
I also recommend OPI Nail Envy. Even if you don't like a product you might need one while you work on the getting the diet and care changes to take effect. Plus, use of this clear cover will help the nails to grow strong. They have a sheer and a matte finish for choices. Reapply every couple days.

Keep nails filed, use cuticle cream or oil, moisturize hands after having them in water. Don't bite them!
I have the same problem. I eat Jello %26amp; use ';Bulletproof'; it's a clear coat of fiber threads that make your nails HARD as a ROCK, but it wears off just like nailpolish so be sure 2 reapply every few days or after washing dishes,ect...
Avon has this nail fortifant stuff that really works..you have to put it on twice a day for 5 days(i put it on for a month!)It's really good though...and its clear!(be sure to clean your nails first!)
you need to have a healthy diet, yes more protiens and veggies. believe it or not, your eating habits do affect your hair and nails :(
eww get a nail clipper or something
eat more milk and yogurt, it will br work

How can i grow my nails, they always end up breaking or splitting.?

the only time i've had nice nails is when i was taking prenatal vitamins and they were awesome...so pretty and not flimsy at all...so i suggest you start taking prenatal vitamins, they can't hurt you after all...How can i grow my nails, they always end up breaking or splitting.?
Don't grow your nails. Big nails do not make someone look attractive. How can i grow my nails, they always end up breaking or splitting.?
try using nailpolish all the time
TRY SALLY HANSEN NAIL HARDNER (CLEAR)..... CUT UP FRESH GARLIC INTO TINY CUBES.... DROP THEM IN THE NAIL POLISH ... AND APPLY TO NAILS AT LEAST ONCE A DAY
Vitamin E is said to help strengthen nails and to help in growing hair. Also if you file your nails. Only file in one direction. As filing back and forth will cause them to split.
apply a clear coat of nail polish every 1 or 2 days. thatz wat my sister does.

ps...dont grow them out TOO much. then it will look sorta creepy
nail stregthener, regular manicures, be a bit more careful with them. Good luck!
Sally Hansen Diamond Cuticle %26amp; Nail Creme.

It hardens your nails. Also, try taking Calcium and Biotin. They'll help some.
i have the same problem, when u find your best answer please let me know
use nail strengthner and everytime it breaks

jus fi-l ur nail then put the nail strengthner
you could use nail strengtheners, but if you be careful and just try to grow them as long as possible without biting or breaking them they'll get stronger each time. Try just putting a clear coat of nail polish over them, it works pretty good.
Try either taking calcium supplements or drinking more milk, I had the same problem and calcium helps out a lot! Let me know what worked and how it turned out!

My fingernails are splitting. I have always had long beautiful nails.?

my doctor told me to use more zinc in my diet. I bought pills. They didn't seem to help. I buy expensive creams and polish .

Any help is appreciated. My fingernails are splitting. I have always had long beautiful nails.?
Exposure to water (frequent hand washing, doing dishes, etc.) will dry out nails and cause splitting/peeling. The water rinses away natural oils and the nail absorbs some water causing the nail layers to expand. As the water evaporates, the nail layers contract leading to splitting/peeling. (like paint exposed to the elements)

My nails used to peel constantly so I stopped using a nail clipper and only use a nail file to shape and shorten them. I also started protecting my nails with thicker moisturizers.

I read somewhere that nail clippers can cause the layers of the nail to separate and filing is the best way to go.

I started with Revlon's disposable files made for weak nails. File in one direction only. Start on one side and file towards the middle, then go to the other side and file towards the middle of your nail. Smooth the nail into a squoval that mirrors you cuticle or the shape of the white part of your nail bed.

Finish the edges of the nail with a hindo stone, a smooth ceramic/stone nail file or the finest grit nail file you can find. You want to make the edges really smooth.

Revlon makes a tool that should work. It is a pink half moon shape and you can run it under/across the nail from side to middle.

(I have an old hindo stone but haven't been able to find a replacement at a local store. The Revlon tool might be easier for you to find.)

    (photo of hindo stone http://www.enailsupply.com/browseproduct鈥?/a>

Also, avoid using metal nail files. I recommend using disposable nail files and changing them frequently. The fresher the grit, the less the drag which leads to tearing and peeling.

Some people swear by glass nail files but they can shatter if dropped.

I also use a cuticle balm or nail oil to moisturize my nails and protect them from water since I wash my hands frequently.

    (ex. Solar Oil, OPI Avoplex)

Vit E oil, jojoba oil, Aquaphor Healing Ointment, Vaseline or plain Chapstick will work too.My fingernails are splitting. I have always had long beautiful nails.?
Dip your fingernail is aromic oils.

The usual cause is repeated wetting and drying of the fingernails. This makes them dry and brittle. This is often worse in low humidity and in the winter (dry heat). The best treatment is to apply lotions containing alpha-hydroxy acids or lanolin containing lotions such as ';Elon'; (by the ';Dartmouth'; company) to the nails after soaking nails in water for 5 minutes and after getting the hands wet.

Try to wear gloves when performing household chores that involve getting the hands wet to avoid repeated wetting and drying of the nails. Cotton lined rubber gloves can be purchased in stores.

If soft, consider that the nails may be getting too much moisture or being damaged by chemicals such as detergents, cleaning fluids and nail polish removers (the acetone containing removers are somewhat worse than acetone free). Some feel that once a week application of clear nail prep once a week may help. Nail polishes with nylon fibers in them may add strength.

Be gentle to you nails. Shape and file the nails with a very fine file and round the tips in a gentle curve. Daily filing of snags or irregularities helps to prevent further breakage or splitting. Avoid metal instruments on the nail surface to push back the cuticle. If the nails are ';buffed'; do this in the same direction as the nail grows and not in a ';back and forth'; motion because this can cause nail splitting.

Biotin (a vitamin) taken by mouth is beneficial. Gets the ';Biotin ultra'; 1 mg. size as it also comes as much smaller pills and take 2 or three a day. It takes at least 6 months, but does really help at least 1/3 of the time. Do not take this if you are pregnant. Calcium, colloidal minerals, and/or gelatin don't help consistently.
Soak nails in some warmed olive oil. This is an old, simple and wonderful remedy. Soak for 5-10 min. once a day until you see improvement. Wipe your nails gently with a tissue after treatment.
    take biotin

Im diabetic was on insulin back on tabs metformin. my nails r wafer thin and keep splitting anybody have this?

problem doc said eat jelly..always had good strong nails hate jellyIm diabetic was on insulin back on tabs metformin. my nails r wafer thin and keep splitting anybody have this?
You could try calcium tablets, it is the gelatine from the animal bones that work in jelly.Im diabetic was on insulin back on tabs metformin. my nails r wafer thin and keep splitting anybody have this?
I have the same problem and i get a manicure with acrylics every two weeks.

My Manicurist uses a special adhesive since my nails are so thin , the nails would simply fall off.
Can you blend the gelatin with milk or some other drink? Or blend it into some custard or something?

It is tasteless so it should blend into a food really well.

We can get capsules with gelatin in them here in the USA. I don't have a clue as to whether you can get them or not. Then you just swallow them like the metformin tabs.

Modify your food plan so you are eating more green leafy veggies? this has helped me a lot. my nails are much better since I got control of the glucose and am eating mostly meats, green leafy veggies, tomatoes, and sometimes an apple.
I am diabetic also and on metformin, i have had the same problem, jello is the best thing but, i also found a nail hardner works well. It happens alot when your blood sugar isn't completely under control, once i got mine stable i didn't have near the problems.

What can I do to keep my nails from splitting?

My nails often split, as in one layer peels off from another. I am wondering how I can prevent this. I paint my nails a lot and also use a lot of nail polish remover, could this be the cause?

Thank you! What can I do to keep my nails from splitting?
Absolutely, The amount of chemicals you are using is really drying out your nail. Start using a base coat under your nail polish and preferrably use a formaldehyde and toluene free nail polish. (OPI has now removed these harsh chemicals form their newer colors). There are also nail polish removers you can purchase that are toluene free, and don't dry out your nails as much. What can I do to keep my nails from splitting?
i dont think that could be it

well 1 be careful when your nails are wet. thats wen they are EXTREMELY weak.

2nd my mom said garlic helps. and it does! i've tried it. they have some hardeners in stores though if you dont like the smell of garlic lol

but if you dont want to try the garlic remedy just buy a clear nail polish and ground the garlic and add it to the nail polish and mix it and apply. good luck!
Your diet also affects this. if you are not getting enough calcium, Vitamins E and B, and good fats (olive oil, oily fish, nuts, avocados, etc) it can cause your nails to split. Try taking a mutivatimin and cutting out processed foods
Use Sally Hanson's 'hard as nails' nail growth polish.

It works! Drink milk and get alot of calcium in your system, it helps the nail grow harder and longer. Also use clear nail hardener.

my basset hounds nails keep splitting and are really dry . what can i do to help stop them from splitting and being dry and how do i treat itMy basset hounds nails keep splitting?
Are you trimming his nails on a regular basis? My basset's nails split when they are too long. You should be cutting them about every two to three weeks. If you are unsure on how to cut them, take your dog to a groomer and ask them if you can watch. Or invest in the pedi-paw nail trimming system, I hear it works very well, and you don't have to worry about cutting the nail too short.

How to cure splitting finger nails?

So, I used to be a cronic nail biter. A few years ago I started having jell tips put on and now, having kicked the biting habit, grow my nails naturally. My problem is about five of my fingernails split at the ends (the top layer kinda chips off and peels). Is there any way to correct this?

When it happens, I either snip the nail to below the split or file the top down and put some clear coat on but it always happens again! Do you know of any nail streghtening product on the market that works? I have even been told to eat more jello - is there any truth to that? How to cure splitting finger nails?
    here:

    -drink ore milk

-buy one of these nail hardening or extra calcium nail polishes

-use it everyweek.. or so, it can be applied under another polish, and its usually transparent when it dries. Slightly tinted ones are sold too

    - after every bath dip your nails into body butter, and massage the figer tips and nails

-everytime a nail starts splitting cut it straight off,, dont let it wait. If right now this happens often, carry your manicure tools around with you... soon this will stop if you cut it off as soon as possible...

-get a proper manicure for all fingers. i mean ALL... cut of like.. half a milimeter at least.. even on healthy ones.. after every bath or shower..How to cure splitting finger nails?
well there is this nail strengthening top coat.... i know that your thinking i already tried top coats. But i used to have the exact same problem as you and i but i bought this product that has garlic in it. i dont remember what it was called but all of them work just as long as they have garlic in it!
Yes jello has protein in it and is good. Also make sure you get enough calcium in your diet and take vitamins.
To keep my nails from splitting I use Talika Nail regenerator serum!!!! Works great!!!!

Onychoschizia or splitting of the fingernails is a common problem seen by dermatologists. The term onychoschizia includes splitting, brittle, soft or thin nails. Onychoschizia is more common in women.

Only very rarely are internal disease or vitamin deficiencies the reason (iron deficiency is the most common). One tip is that if the fingernails split, but the toenails are strong, then an external factor is the cause. Basically brittle nails can be divided into dry and brittle (too little moisture) and soft and brittle (often too much moisture).

Daily filing of snags or irregularities helps to prevent further breakage or splitting. Avoid metal instruments on the nail surface to push back the cuticle. If the nails are ';buffed'; do this in the same direction as the nail grows and not in a ';back and forth'; motion because this can cause nail splitting.

not sure, go to the doc, they always know what to do.
You might not be getting enough lean protein and silica. You can take b vitamins too, your nails can tell you alot about your insides. Silica is an essential mineral needed for healthy nails. Go to the health food store and get some!
drink more milk! i love milk n i've got lovely nails.
may b u r using those nailz that u hav to stick them over ur nailz to hav the perfect nails shape and some times the water goes between the real nail and the nail u sticked it and may b u have to go and check doctor for vitaminz check up may b u hav vitaminz problim
I have the same problem! both thumb nails have been split down the middle for ten years now. I've tried calcium.. doesn't work. Drink more than the average amount of milk.. doesn't work. Tried Biotin... nope. It is hopeless. There is no cure. Sorry for the heart breaking news. The only thing to do is use lotion to keep them from drying and cracking or peeling any further.. and be careful not to scratch away any of the soft gelatin-like part in the middle if they are wet -- it can become a very defined groove there after a while. Also, dont try filing the rest of the nail to hide the split, it just comes back and you could accidently file down to the skin since it is very thin anyway.

nice of you to care for your partner
    Eat an healthy diet!

Brazil nuts are full of zinc which is good for the nails.

When cleaning alway wear your rubbers-this includes washing up..

Use a good hand cream one that includes nails as well..

    works sooooo good!
gentle buffing of the nails can help if there are ridges. Try Nail Magic, it's a great product with guaranteed results. Most beauty salons stock it.
use the nail strengthner nailpolish and lots of moisturizer
Sally Hansen Hard as Nails. They sell it at Wal-Mart for cheap.
    Diamond Strength by Sally Hensen
They have nail polish for that. It's by Sally Hansen. They sell it at a lot of places.
nail hardener or she can get alil acrylic put over her nails to help keep them from breaking or wateva.
The Sally Henson stuff works really well, but you have to be sure to follow the directions. I believe it says to apply more polish every 2 days. If you don't do that, it doesn't really do much for you.

    Goodluck!
To keep your nails from getting weak i would recommend a healthy diet,to wear gloves when washing dishes,to use a nail strengthener by the Jessica range which a lot of celebrities are using and a lot of salons are too.
Healthy nails come from good nutrition. Topical nail strengtheners work but you have to apply them daily. The most effective way to prevent nail splitting is to have a healthy diet that includes plenty of protein and vitamin E. If your partner doesn't want to become a health food fanatic, she can opt for supplements. Prenatal vitamins work really well in this regard.

    Good luck!

    Why are my nails splitting?

My nails have recently started splitting, and i don't know why. They usually grow out really nice, but within the last few week they have started peeling horizontally. I Don't use nail polish, so that cannot be it. I am only eighteen, so it isn't age. I did use some cleaners in my car recently, could it be that? I also am wondering if it is diet. I am in college, so my eating is sometimes a little sporadic (meaning sometimes i just don't for lack of time or money) I do eat very healthy when i do eat though. Not too much sugar, good amount of fruits and veggis. What could be the cause? Is there something specific i should be eating? Why are my nails splitting?
You have a calcium deficiency. You can take calcium with vitamin D vitamins. 600 Mg's twice a day. Better yet, also drink 3 glasses of any kind of milk daily, and eat cheese, yogurt, cottage cheese, and ice cream. The more calcium the better! :)Why are my nails splitting?

Using a good quality basecoat will usually take care of that problem. Basecoats form a barrier between your natural nail, and the polish and prevents your nails from staining. This is especially important with darker shades of polish as they tend to stain nails quite easily.

As far as splitting goes the answer may not lie in your dieting patterns, or the vitamins you consume. The answer may lie in the activities you do with your hands.. also if you are a smoker your nails are more easy to break, but if you are not it could be just that you are using your hands too much in hot water, cold weather etc.
Dont worry,u will be absolutely fine if u increase consumption of Calcium in form of food as well calcium tablets.Go for regular manicure and dont let ur nail colour stay for months which leads to staining on nails.
due to bad nail remover.my nails also yellow in colour but not now.avoid using nail colour 4 some time.
Well if you are a smoker this can cause this...

If you are then maybe you should stop smoking...

How to stop your nails from splitting when they get longer?

Hi! I am a Nail Tech and the answer is simple :) Your nails split because they are dry. The longer the nail grows, the more dehydrated the tips become as this is the 'oldest' part of the nail. Drink plenty of water to hydrate your skin, nails, and hair. Also, keep those hand out of water as when your hands dry from being in the water is causes the natural oils to evaporate as well. Also, using a good cuticle oil twice a day will help tremendously! :)How to stop your nails from splitting when they get longer?
Drink More Milk. How to stop your nails from splitting when they get longer?
jsut get hard as nails nail polish instead of getting fancy manicurs n stuff
you can drink milk till the cows come home...(pun intended) but sometimes nails just have a tendency to split. mine do, and I get them silkwrapped at the manicurist. Either that or you can get them strengthened at the nail shop with a bond of the material they use for acrylic nails..also, it's been said that drinking Knox gelatin will help, because its collagen.
drink alot of milk and eat alot cheese (everything that comes from a cow or there is a relation between it and a cow just get it into ur mouth LOL)

take multi vitamins like CENTRUM or just take the nail and hair vitamin u can find it everywhere and no need for prescription...

use sally henson's nail polish that strengthen ur nails its really good

    good luck :)

    Stop thumb nails from splitting?

I like to grow my nails long, and normally paint them with nail shine twice a week and put cuticle oil on the about every 2 days. My nails are generally strong, and don't normally break, but once they get to a certain length my thumb nails always split down the sides. Is there a way to stop them doing this?Stop thumb nails from splitting?

  • My finger nails keep splitting and are soft?

I have kept cutting them very short so they can recover but they just Split again as they grow any ideas what i can do, thank youMy finger nails keep splitting and are soft?
I have the same problem. The issue could be a result of nutritional deficiencies or it could just be genetics. Im taking a multivitamin which is good for overall health, but it also contains biotin. Biotin is a supplement that is supposed to be really great for skin, hair and nails and it has worked GREAT for me!

After taking the vitamin for a while my nails grew so pretty! Im not joking. You can buy biotin by itself in any vitamin shop. I suggest using the supplement and using a clear nail polish for extra strength; assuming you would prefer your natural nails as oppose to acrylic. My finger nails keep splitting and are soft?
It could be a number of things:- a vitamin defiency ( Vit B + D namely ) or could indicate a problem with your kidneys or liver! Sorry, i didn't mean to frighten you and i'm not, for one minute, suggesting you have a major problem with your internal organs but even a slight infection in our inner organs will tell in our nails, hair, eyes and skin! Book an appointment with your doctor and explain whats been happening and ask for a blood test - it'll rule out inner organ problems plus he / she will be able to give you the vitamins you're lacking in higher strengths than you can get over the counter. Best of luck.
try %26amp; keep them out of water or wear gloves

water shrinks the nails %26amp; makes it brittle

don't use nail polish remover or wear alot of colored nail polish

just use clear nail polish, %26amp; that way you only have to redo the

clear nail polish like every 2-3 weeks

Never cut your nails, only file them

%26amp; when you do, go One way going back %26amp; forth will cause them to split.
Broccoli and cauliflower. Both are high in silicon to make strong nails. Also the red kidney beans in chilli. Have the cauli as cauliflower cheese.

I am wasting my breath, nobody ever gives best answer for this - but you can't get nails from a bottle.
get nail envy nail polish that strengthens your nails.

i have really long nails and everyone always asks me how i grow them out and i just say don't bite them and that's pretty much it.

but if yours split then you have to strengthen it with some polish that has vitamins or something :)
Buy some nail strengthening cream and put it on the bottom part of your nails everyday to that they grow strong. You can also buy clear nail varnish that strengthens your nails and make them look nice and healthy. Make sure you have lots of calcium in your diet too
Try to be careful when washing the dishes (wear gloves etc.) also you can try black nail polish, many people say it strengthens the nails and helps them grow.

You can get it in Boots or online.
as a qualified beautican id advise u to use a nail strengthener and use it everyday and file ur nails regular and apply a top coat or a clear varnish to help stop this x

what helps is putting on a clear nailpolish hardener and taking regular vitiamns.
get more calcium through your diet, soft and brittle nails occur from a lack of nutrients
get yourself a clear nail varnish and apply it regularly.
eat more stuff with calcium in it: cheese milk yogurt enriched breads etc

My finger nails keep splitting, I have tried lots of products on .the market without result. Any help please?

I know that water is causing my finger nails to split and peel, because I had a nasty accident and I couldn't do any housework, so for 4 months I had beautiful nails. As soon as I started some work in the kitchen my nails started to peel again. I do use gloves when doing the dishes. Any suggestions please? My finger nails keep splitting, I have tried lots of products on .the market without result. Any help please?
If you use gloves then maybe it's not the water cuz your hands haven't been in the water to do dishes. Your nails might have been long because you were on medication due to your accident too. Which medication worked? Ask your doctor. Low thyroid levels cause splitting of the nails as well.....a simple blood test. Ask the doc and good luckMy finger nails keep splitting, I have tried lots of products on .the market without result. Any help please?
It's all about your diet, also if your using illegal drugs it will really hurt you. I worked in detriot for 6 weeks and my nails have never been stronger, maybe move to there.
    have lots of calcium.

I have also heard that soaking your nails in milk helps, but I think this is an old wives' tale
try eating and drinking milk cheese and yogourt (sp )

the calsium will help on only your nails but you skin ,hair and teeth it will take time but those will work best if you have a problem with milk try calsium tablets but consult your doc first

where rubber gloves when doing house work and try geting a manicure as well they can realy help
    Definitely get a dishwasher!!

The Spanish rub garlic and olive oil into the cuticles. I'd certainly try the olive oil, but not the garlic!! (I'd end up sucking my fingers all day)!

Good nutrition is essential too, or a multivitamin to boost you up.

There are nail formula supplements out there too, but I think it's more important to eat well.

Keep your nails shorter too, then you won't be disappointed when they split and break.
    Sounds like you have Onychoschizia

The best treatment is to avoid repeated wetting and drying of the nails. Try to wear cotton lined rubber gloves when performing household chores that involve getting the hands wet.

Rub lotions containing alpha-hydroxy acids such as Neostrata or lanolin containing lotions such as Elon into the nails both before and after getting the hands wet.

Watch people who have beautiful nails. Notice how they use their hands or finger pads to do simple chores rather than use their nails. Never dial a phone with the nail tips; use a pencil. Nails should never be used as tools. Get in the habit of using your fingers as if they have wet polish on them.

If you can鈥檛 avoid trauma to the nail tips, keep the nails cut short.

Always wear gloves during cold weather and when you do chores which may traumatize the nail tips.

Never peel or scrape off nail polish.

Shape and file the nails with a very fine file and round the tips in a gentle curve. Daily filing of snags or irregularities helps to prevent further breakage or splitting. Never use metal instruments on the nail surface to push back the cuticle because this scrapes away the microscopic protective cells of the nail surface.

When (and if) the nails are ';buffed,'; do this in the same direction as the nail grows and not in a ';back and forth'; motion because this can cause nail splitting.

Nail polish can protect the nail surface. The almost daily application of a ';top coat'; will keep the nail tips protected. Nail polishes with nylon fibers in them may add strength and protection to fragile nails. Use nail polish remover as infrequently as possible because it dries out the nails.

One study has shown that biotin (a vitamin) 2.5 mg a day taken by mouth is beneficial. Do not do this if you are pregnant.

Some patients are convinced that one pack of Knox Gelatin mixed with orange juice and taken by mouth each day will restore nails to a youthful state. There is no scientific data that supports the use of unflavored gelatin to strengthen nails.

Taking colloidal minerals and a multivitamin each day has been shown to increase the speed of nail growth which in turn leads to healthier nails.
Try to eat healty food: peanuts, vegetables and fruits and don麓t forget to add some vegetable oil in your diet. Remember to eat calsiumtablettes. Use some strengtening naillack, handlotion, massage oil and protecting base for nails like Trind - in these products i麓m sure that you麓ll get your beaufiful nails back.
Eat a cube of jelly every day. Make sure you have enough calcium in your diet, rub any edible oil into your fingernails before you begin to prepare food %26amp; at night moiturise your hands %26amp; nails %26amp; wear cotton gloves to bed.
dont worry about the products to use on them, feed your body proper food!!! Like milk for calcium which is why they are peeling %26amp; splitting. I suggest you buy health tabs ABC vitamins plus some zinc as this is what you are lacking to stop that. Ohterwise just eat the right foods which supply these elements.
Sounds like a dietary problem to me. Too much of this and not enough of that.

The healthiest diet is vegetarian, with lots of fruit, some green leaved vegetables, nuts and seeds. If you have a juicer, drink lots of freshly made fruit and vegetable juice, like carrot and apple is good.

Avoid plastic foods, like frozen stuff and canned stuff. Avoid preservatives, MSG, aspartame, and all sodas. Eat as natural as possible.
My nails kept splitting and breaking easily so i started to take multivitamin every day, so that i would be getting everything my body needs....and my nails are really strong and long now, they hardly break or split.....i recommend Sanatogen Gold Tablets
Get your hubby to do the dishes.
EveK is right. Calcium Plus Zinc is what your body is lacking. Go to Vitamin World and get you some good Multi's or a Cal-Mag-Zinc. Also, massage your cuticles and nails with a cream that contains vitamins A.

My nails are like paper and are splitting and not growing. Keep breaking off and are real short.?

What can I take or use for nails that are brittle and soft and won't grow. Is there a supplement I can take and does it work?My nails are like paper and are splitting and not growing. Keep breaking off and are real short.?
You need ';hair skin %26amp; nail'; vitamins. Yes, they work. I prefer as natural a brand as I can find. Sometimes disorders of the nails can be a sign of an internal health issue. Most times it's just a lack of good protein in your diet and/or heredity. I used to have nails like that. I started taking the vitimains and within a couple months I seen an improvement. It alsohelps when you file your nails to do from the side to the center. Don't use the file like a saw back and forth, that causes nails to split as well.My nails are like paper and are splitting and not growing. Keep breaking off and are real short.?
i use Sally Hansen Miracle Nail Growth and my nails grew a lot faster, they were harder, and didn't break. You can find it at Walmart or any beauty supply store. You just put it on every other day and make sure to clean under your nails everyday. I swear by this stuff.
go to the doctor and rule out any deficiency.

nails can be a tale tell sign of things.
I think it's Sally Hansen that makes a product, hard as nails, it's clear and will help to protect and strengthen your nails. But I think the bigger issue is to figure out why this is happening. It sounds like you have some sort of vitamin/mineral deficiency in your diet. I'd go see your doctor to have him/her check it out.
well i used to have acrylics but i use NYC nail varnish '; grow 10 nails'; and i used ME ME ME nail varnish to harden it. i cant remember the name but it is transparent but the liquid it green tho but it come out transparent xx

hope i have helped you thanks xx
Try using OPI nail envy, apply this to your nails twice a week and you will see a real difference within 3-4 weeks, you can also buy supplements from Holland and Barretts for hair and nails
drink milk...nails and hair need calcium. also.. you can use a nail hardener it is like a nail polish. I have the same problem ACRYLIC is my best friend
I used to get that too! Basicly you could go to the docters they would gve you something for it. Or you need to to have loads of dairy like milk or cheese. Hope this helps! xx
You have to keep them moisturized. After showers and washing dishes, put lotion on. Supplements can only do so much.

Can my splitting nails be saved?

my 2 big toenails are in very bad shape. the ends keep splitting and never seem to be able to grow properly. i think it's because i used to split apart the layers of my big toenail and peel them off when i was young. i try not to do that anymore but it keeps splitting and i have no choice but to cut the split layer off and the cycle just keeps repeating! i don't have this problem with any of my other nails so i'm really hoping that i can get this problem fixed as i've been having it for years! thanks :)Can my splitting nails be saved?
try hydrating your nails with lots of lotion and cuticle oil. Nail lose moisture 10 times as fast as skin, so you can see where this could present a problem. Also, if it persists go get a pedicure somewhere where they are from America (or someone who speaks fluent english and is understandable) so you can ask them if they have any suggestions. No offense to the Asians but it is hard to ask them questions and get a fully understandable, answered, question.

How do i stop my nails from splitting?

Last year i took off the acrylic off my nails after 4 years! long time, i know! They grew really long every time, but now that i have taken the acrylic off they grow to a certain length and then they start splitting from the edges. Help!!!How do i stop my nails from splitting?
I was going to tell you to put on acrylic nails, but my bad. Have you tried taking Knox gelatin? I know you can buy it in pretty much any grocery store. It is by the Jello, and it comes in capsules. I know this may sound trange but my nails were the strongest and the healthiest when I was taking pre-natal vitiams. If these dont work for you try asking the persont that done your nails for all those years. Maybe they have a better idea. How do i stop my nails from splitting?
    cut them
Mine do that too!!! I don' know exactly why but they do. What I've found helpful is to file them every week and then buff them VERY well with ta file first going side to side then up and down. After that I use mineral strength nail caoting by Avon. this usually helps for a while then when they start peeling again then do it again. If you paint your nails then put the mineral strength on first then the paint then top coat. HOPE THIS HELPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyone have good advice on growing finger nails i have got them long and dread filing them as they split?

    Here's what you do.

Invest in a good Buffer, DO NOT USE AN EMERY BOARD, UNLESS YOU KNOW HOW TO USE THEM PROPERLY.

Do not use a nail file by filing back and fourth, only file one way, as going back and fourth can lead to splitting the nails, and then when you get your hands wet, the water travels up the nails causing them more damage.

So, like I said buy yourself a nail buffer, buff your nails twice a week, not for too long and not too hard as this can also damage the nail, and buffing too hard will make your nails burn, that is a sign of too much buffing and a sign that the nail is thinning, and that's not good, so just buff enough to stimulate the nail growth.

When filing, instead of using a harsh emery board, use a soft nail file, as these won't damage the nail like a harsh emery board. I never cut mine, or clip them, I just file them with a soft board.

Then apply some hand cream, use Vaseline Hand and Nail Cream. I use this as a cuticle cream too, its really good and inexpensive.

I have done numerous nail courses, and have loads of nail stuff, so if you want to email me with your address, and I will send you a soft cushion nail file and a buffer. They can be washed and used over and over again.

All the best, and don't be shy to email me.Anyone have good advice on growing finger nails i have got them long and dread filing them as they split?
Take prenatal vitamins, and and rub your nails against the nails on your other hand to stimulate blood flow, and nutrition to the nail.Anyone have good advice on growing finger nails i have got them long and dread filing them as they split?
Drink lots of water and milk!

Also try dipping your nails in a sink filled with water and a bit of olive oil, that hardens your nails!

I have very long nails and they never split!

    Luv u xxx
The more you use your hands the faster the fingernails grow, honest. When I played piano my fingernails grew like the clappers. A healthy, balanced diet will also help keep them strong.
Eat a cube of jelly a day works wonders (not the whole pack ) that will make your waist grow LOL

You may really want to consider changing your diet. Trust me, it works. You'll se the results after a while. Drink milk, eat eggs fish, meat (unless you're veg)...Proteins generally and carbs. Yo'll see the difference.

How do you get you nails to grow long and strong, without breaking, splitting or peeling?

I found out that Sally Hansen products works very well for me.How do you get you nails to grow long and strong, without breaking, splitting or peeling?
I had the same problem. solution is of all things peanut butter as it is very high in protien and the amino acid that nail factor comes from...yes it really works, figure at least 90 days. toast and pb in morning and a pbj at night....How do you get you nails to grow long and strong, without breaking, splitting or peeling?
Some people say take gelatin capsules..

I personally take a supplement called Calcium Pantothenate which makes both your hair and nails grow long and strong. It's available from AVON in their vitamin/supplement section as Hair Care from Within. It has worked wonders with both my hair and my nails!
don't soak them in cleaning products...keep your hands moistened as much as possible, making sure to apply the lotion to the tips of your fingers including the nails. i find that my nails grow longer and stronger and more quickly if i at least keep a clear coat of polish on them, and i prefer the sally hansen nail hardener products. they always work for me. the trick here is, if you have to wash dishes by hand, when you're done, take the nail polish remover and apply it to all your nails. after that, apply lotion. now you're ready to add that clear coat to your nails. this has worked for me without fail for the past ten years. hope it helps you too.
start with a good soaking with a mild soap. then work on your then start working on the nail base pushing all the skin loose that is attached to your nail on top. Get a good nail conditioner there are good ones out there.

then allways keep file handie to handle (while watching tv use this time to buff your nails and the skin around them. this gets blood to the nail bed and promotes more growth. I buff and sand my fingers all around . It stop me from biting them and it keeps me from eating ! Good enough for me you get 3 benefits instead of just pretty nails.
    stay away from cleaning products
Increase your calcium intake. I drink a lot of milk and eat lots of cheese. My nails grow really long. Stay away from nail polishes, they make your nails weak.
    Steroids!
Eat lots of protein and use Sally Hansen Hard as Nails.
Soak them in the blood of a virgin everynight before you go to sleep.
You paint them every morning with clear coat nail polish.
Try Sally Hansen Nail Hardener. You can find it at Target, Kmart, Walgreens. It really works. My hands spend a lot of time in the water and this nail polish seems to stay on and strengthen my nails.
get a good hand and nail cream. Also what you eat affects your nails - I think protein and calcium are important for nails. You can apply nail polish to help keep them strong while they grow too. I think you can get special nail strengthening polish.
lots of vitamins will help ,

I wear acrylic nails. I was traveling and let my fill go for about 3 weeks. The matrix on my thumbnail split

I did have the nail filled. Help?????I wear acrylic nails. I was traveling and let my fill go for about 3 weeks. The matrix on my thumbnail split
Youre not going to like this but your nail needs to breathe and circulate! Your nail bed has obviously been damaged! I love having nails myself but I took mine off to let the nail repair and to avoid fungus! I would take them off by soaking them in acetone, after they are off lightly buff and use cuticle oil and hand cream constantly... If you end up having a fungus Dr. G's is a great anti-fungal remedy! Im assuming your nails are done with a dremel drill which is highly damaging to the nail bed and is not recommended! In top salons they do not use drills for these reasons and sanitation purposes!I wear acrylic nails. I was traveling and let my fill go for about 3 weeks. The matrix on my thumbnail split
I got my nails done faithfully for over a year. Eventually they started hurting when ever I got them done. I decided to not get them done for a while. My nails were thin because of the acrylics, but I bought some Sally Hanson triple strong gel, and My nails are healthy and strong again.

I have a severe problem with weak, splitting nails. I am now taking Biotin?

I have tried ';many ';drugstore brand nail products that promise to strengthen nails, seal splits etc.....but none have worked ....it seems to wear off quickly on the split area...

I saw a treatment today at Sally's that promises professional salon results ...you use it for a month before you can apply nail polish and then once a week after...anyone know anything about that...

  • How can I have healty nails? Mine have started to split.?

Get a really good hand cream to help strengthen your nails, there are loads to choose from - I like Avon and Nivea products. Keep your nails short while you nourish them. You could also try a nail strengthener that you paint onto your nails - there is a good range from Sally Hansen. For an intensive treatment buy a good handcream and some thin cotton gloves, then before you go to bed smother your hands with cream and put the gloves on. If you wear them all night you will wake up with silky smooth hands. How can I have healty nails? Mine have started to split.?
always eat a healthy balanced diet so your nails get all the nutrition they need. if the splitting is becoming serious, go to a dermatologist, otherwise you can try one of the products in the drugstore like sally hansenHow can I have healty nails? Mine have started to split.?
You have a nail fungus. You need to go to the doctor. He will give you something for it. That is the only way you'll get rid of it.
    drink more milk!!!
According to some magazines if you take kelp supplements it helps your nails to grow strong and healthy. Apparently it is also good for your hair but I've heard better feed-back about nails.
Get more calcium in your diet (Milk/Yogurt %26amp; Cheese)

You should be eating at least one piece of dairy per day. That'll help your nails, teeth and bones.
try using OPI nail stengthener, i think it can be purchesed online on QVC site.....it really does make them rock hard in just a few days and should prevent spliting
check out OPI they have a really great product called nail magic

it really works ( their polishes are really good too)
Most of the ';Hair and Nails'; vitamin supplements seem to be variations on theme of a Vitamin B complex. When I had problems with my hair suddenly falling out (don't ask!) my GP recommended taking a daily Vitamin B complex and I noticed that not only my hair, but also my nails started growing much faster and were better condition!

Not being a doctor myself I have no idea why, and maybe it's not safe for everyone to suddenly take huge doses of the stuff...but you could check with your own GP and see if it's alright for you (or just start eating loads of Vitamin B rich vegetables and see if that helps!)
the only thing that works with my nails is a multivitamin every day .it takes a few weeks for them to grow but it works wonders
Try a professional nail strengthtener like the one made by european secrets sold at Sally's for like 5.00.
You need a good protien base. Mary Kay has a good one. It runs 10 dollars canadian a bottle. Go to a place that does nails, get a manicure. There is one product, can't remember the name... it's called Nail Envy, that's it. You can get it at most salons. It will make them hard and help them to grow. It's about 20 dollars a bottle. Moisturize moisturize. You have healthy cuticles, healthy cuticles promote healthy hands. Use rubber gloves in the garden and when you are cleaning.
You can get a nail strenthener which is like a clear nail polish, also put more calcium into your diet.

opi makes nail treatment polishes they are very good they are clear and there is one for splitting nails
get out of the building game
stop eating crisps and stuff with additives
dip them in milk for ten minutes. Then eat lots of bread and drink more milk.
use opi nail envy, works miracles on mine, and use a good handcream everytime you wash your hands
use a product called solar oil all over your nails and cuticles.

Sally hansen do some great nail therapys as do OPI but can be quite expensive

if your looking for somthing cheaper just use almond oil, brush it on and rub it in well..
how is your diet? is it well balanced? are you getting enough minerals?

    do you drink enough fluids?

what you take inside shows on the outside.

maybe you're not ingesting enough hydrating elements.

the nails may not have enough moisture.

check that out... get that vitamin d and c also.
Eat 2 squares of raw jelly a day
buy yourself a complete nail kit to nourish your nails and follow the instructions to the letter
Try buffing your nails a couple of times a week, as this will get the circulation going in your nail plate, don't buff too hard as you will make your fingers feel like they have bruises. Purchase some nail polish for splitting nails, OPI do a good one, but it is very expensive, try ebay, and you might get one cheaper.

Do not use nail polish remover too often as this doesn't help, its only drying your nails out.

When washing up or doing anything dirty with your hands, make sure you wear gloves. Also use a good hand and nail moisteriser, this will also help your nails to get healthy and grow nice.
On top of calcium make sure you're having plenty of good fats ie seeds, nuts, oily fish.

My nails breaks easily and split in layers.. wht should i do?

They make a type of clear nail polish and all you have to do is put it on like you are just painting your nails. It will help make them thicker and stronger. Just keep repeating it and in no time you will have beautiful nails. My nails breaks easily and split in layers.. wht should i do?
Some stores have special nail polish that can help weak nails. My grandmother had the same thing, so she went to her doctor and he prescribed a medicine. Also it could be from lack of minerals. Good luck!My nails breaks easily and split in layers.. wht should i do?
I'm a nail tech, I would say that you can use you a parffin wax dips, And also you can try reshaping your nails a different way try squaring them off. Yes men can go with the square look it's okay to! Try a good nail fortifier for your nails to.
There's a nailpolish that is clear that my mom uses called Nailtiques. It just hardens your nails and makes them stronger. It really does work actually. There are other kinds too, but I recommend Nailtiques. (:

Advice needed for post-op canine nail cauterization treatment of nail bleeding, darkening & splitting?

After my dogs nail cauterization, his nails have continued to bleed and other conditions have developed for which the vet has provided me no explanation or treatment for. It's been 1 1/2 months since the proceedure and my dog's nails have started turning black (suspect from blood filling in the nail space) and most are splitting up the backs to the toe. He's had a nail/toe infection which was subsequently treated with antibiotics, but seems to be in discomfort from the whole nail cautery proceedure post-op. Just last week, a nail completely fell off at the toe. They have grown long again but the vet has been reluctant to trim them because of their current state. Has anyone out there had this type of experience with their pets nails after cauterization that can give me some helpful info to treat my dogs nail condition, or can anyone out there with vet experience give me some info on what to do for my pet? Thank you!Advice needed for post-op canine nail cauterization treatment of nail bleeding, darkening %26amp; splitting?
Never have seen or heard of this personally happening so can't give you any advice other than go to another vet for 2nd diagnosis. I don't blame vet for not trimming them if there was an infection. Never seen them turn black afterwards or having infections though possible since they are cutting into the quick. Just go to another vet %26amp; see what they say about condition. You might be able to file a complaint against vet if there was neglect on their part to the state veterinary board.

Just recently my bigtoe nails have been splitting vertically.?

I have kept nail polish off since I started to notice it, about three months ago, but that doesn's seem to help. We moved from colder weather (Chicago) to Sunny Florida, but still wondering if I am lacking in some type of vitamin. Please help! I hate to spend money just to go to Doctor for him to tell me drink milk or take calicum.Just recently my bigtoe nails have been splitting vertically.?
    Vit C

My nails have been splitting & breaking lately & the shortest they have ever been. What am I lacking in diet?

iron and nutrients try eating more fruit and veg, it can also be caused by applying nail polish and taking it off a lot or tapping your nails.

Whats best 2 hold my 3/4'; fiberboard together 4 my sub box? im afraid nails or screws will split tha wood

Use a bead of wood glue across the entire edge. Use a thin finishing nail (about 2'; long) about every 4 inches. The nails only hold the box together while the wood dries. Most commercial boxes aren't nailed at all, just glued, but they have large clamps to hold the pieces while they dry.Whats best 2 hold my 3/4'; fiberboard together 4 my sub box? im afraid nails or screws will split tha wood
go with some 2 inch sheetrock screws. When you are through use some liquid nails to seal all of the inside cornersand edges, this will help hold everything togather and seal them for air leaksWhats best 2 hold my 3/4'; fiberboard together 4 my sub box? im afraid nails or screws will split tha wood
I completely agree with the above answer. You can easily use screws to put together this type of material as long as you pre-drill it. Make sure you do use at least some sort of sealant, even if it's just 2 sided tape... get a sort of gasket on the seams
2'; or 1 3/4'; wood screws with a wide head. You should drill the holes with a drill bit smaller than the screws first to prevent splitting. Also if you arent cheap, you should get some kind of epoxy ('liquid nail' or such) and glue the seams before putting it together, then run a bead along the seams to prevent air leakage.

  • Why do my nails keep splitting?

the top layer keeps cooming up and i dont know why! my diet is quite balanced nd that..i dont bite them..whats wrong ewith them? Why do my nails keep splitting?
im afraid your nails are just weak-mine are toop and i have a balanced diet lots of calicum and all that :p try a nail strengthener, dont bother getting an expensive one there all the same really saly hanson one for 拢4 is always good :) and just stop playing with them :P ohh and go onWhy do my nails keep splitting?
I think you may need to eat more oily fish like Salmon, Tuna Mackerel, herring etc. But you should ask your Doctor really. You may need extra calcium too but I am no expert. Please see your GP.
    i have the same problem
Massaging your nails and cuticles with vitamin E will help. You should notice results in 2-3 weeks.
    take calcium vitamins!!

also you can buy nailpolish that helps your nails get stronger!
lack of calcium so they say, mine do exactly the same cant grow them they split
mine did that too. sounds like we had the same problem, but now i use sally hansen nail strengthener for about a month now an they dont do that anymore =]
when you file your nails make sure you only file in one direction as ';sawing'; with the file puts heat and friction deep down into the nail making it weak and prone to spliiting. Filing and then buffing them will make them a lot stronger if you do it right, about twice a week will do, then massage them with a cuticle cream.
Your nails sound like they're very dry and weak. After everytime you wash your hands make sure you rub a good moisturiser into your hands and nails and apply a good oil like solar oil or something similar. Use moisturiser morning and night also and make sure when you file you never go at your nails like freddy krueger with a nail file, you want to be really gentle and use a very fine file. Hope that helps!
that happens to EVERYONE. the top layer of your nail (on the tip of the nail) always comes off eventually. its not your diet or anything like that. its just probably dead nail that needs to come off. kinda like skin. dont we worried or anything its really nothing! =]

My pinky toenails are split as if I've 2 nails in 1 toe. My parents & my sis have 'em but not my kids. Why?

I'm always puzzled by the fact that both my pinky toenails are split with a bigger nail and a smaller nail. I tried to pull the small nail out few times but it would eventually grow back. My parents have them, my sister have them, but my two daughers don't. I don't know whether my brother-in-law has it or not but I know my nephews don't. Few of my friends have that too. Like myself, they are all ethic Chinese. My pinky toenails are split as if I've 2 nails in 1 toe. My parents %26amp; my sis have 'em but not my kids. Why?
It is possible that it is a trait that requires two dominant genes to be present in offspring, so since your parents both have it they probably have the gene so their kids got it, but since your mate doesn't have the gene your kids have regular toenails. My pinky toenails are split as if I've 2 nails in 1 toe. I have really bad nails, they are weak and split a lot at the top and just in general suck.?

any idea what's wrong and what could help them (no products please)?I have really bad nails, they are weak and split a lot at the top and just in general suck.?
I used to have really brittle nails and could never grow them because they would split way down into the skin and bleed...I started taking calcium and now I have long natural, healthy nails and they are so strong!!! It makes them grow faster too!!! Good luck and I hope this helps!!!I have really bad nails, they are weak and split a lot at the top and just in general suck.?
Calcium , vitamin E , and do the dishes by hand. I have never had a nail problem.
Calcium %26amp; silicon should help that. Especially silicon. Oats, cabbage %26amp; grapes are particularly high in silicon... those should help.
vitamins! they work wonders! just a regular everyday vitamin like centrum. guarantee you will see results. i had that problem too
Me for being a guy, i have them thick and shinny.....and I also have long lashes.....and no im not gay!
Make sure that you are getting a well balanced diet, with enough protein, the basic building block for hair and nails. Protect your hands and nails where possible, by using gloves when outdoors in cold weather, and wearing rubber gloves when doing household chores or exposing your hands and nails to chemicals or cleaning products. Also, make sure you use a hand lotion, any kind, after each time that you wash your hands to make your nails more flexible so that they aren't brittle and prone to chipping. The healthier your cuticles are, the healthier your nail growth will be.

How can I stop my nails from breaking/peeling/splitting?

My names are gross! I have to keep them so short becuase otherwise they spilit in half, peel, or get really thin. i dont bite them or anyhting like that. What should i do?How can I stop my nails from breaking/peeling/splitting?
there are lots of products which you can use to protect your nails. keeping them short is already good and go to the mall and ask for assistance in looking for nail protectors. they could be applied as you would a nail polish..

i have relatively thin nails that easily break so i apply transparent/clear nail polish after applying the nail protector i bought from VOV cosmetics... (its asian)

you should also minimize your use of harsh soaps.. i rather use hand sanitizers than frequently washing my hands. i use hand soaps with moisturizers, like that of hte bath and body works..How can I stop my nails from breaking/peeling/splitting?
apply lotion to your nails and hands after shower. Try using body butter; it's a thicker cream and will keep the moisture in longer. Visit glamouredited.com for more beauty tips.
My nails used to be like that, and i tried every product i could find. none of them worked, and eventually i just left them alone, stopped using nail polish and such. I also started eating better, but i'm not sure if that had anything to do with it

How can i get my nails to stop peeling? i used to have gorgeous nails, then my thumb nails started splitting, ?

now, they are all peeling. am i lacking in a vitamin? please help, thanks. How can i get my nails to stop peeling? i used to have gorgeous nails, then my thumb nails started splitting, ?
You need vitamins, And drink more beer....How can i get my nails to stop peeling? i used to have gorgeous nails, then my thumb nails started splitting, ?
This very well could be a factor of needing a boost of a Vit or Mineral, firstly I would try to find out what your lacking, and add this to your diet, or try taking a good quality Multi, to cover many things.

I suggest you also invest in a few products such as a good hand n nail cream, cutical oil and nail buffers.

These may cost a little initially, but is much cheaper than going to a salon or spa, and will keep your nails looking lovely, and continuous buffing will help prevent future peeling. (When nails are not in good condition, this makes you want to bite them too, so if cared for, they do become longer and stronger)

Try a glass of skim milk each day too! Great for needed clcium!

  • Why are my thumb nails growing split in the middle, from the quick?

I have very healthy strong nails. I keep them filed, clear or no polish, but they would grow long very quickly if I wanted to wear them long.

(very healthy lifestyle, no drinking or drugs)

In the last month or so they have been growing with this ridge, break, crack right up the middle of both my thumb nails.. all my other nails are fine.

It's not cracked all the way to the top of my nail, yet, after my nails keep growing for another month or so it will reach the top.

Any idea why this just started happening and how I can get them to start growing normal, unsplit, again.

TIA!!Why are my thumb nails growing split in the middle, from the quick?
Strangely, such splits are usually indicative of damage to the nail bed.

Is masturbation causing my nails to split?

Every now and then I go through a few weeks where my nails get very brittle. I eat pretty healthy; not a lot of preservatives, fairly balanced, eat my veggies; avoid soda, take a multi vitamin. My hair is healthy and grows super fast. My nails are usually healthy and strong...but the ends start to split horribly and it seems to coincide with my dating/sex life, to put it politely.

When they go back to normal, I haven't changed anything about my lifestyle except for that I'm sexually active on a regular basis and rely less on masturbation. Vaginal secretions are supposed to contain ';high levels of prostatic acid phosphatase (a chemical secreted by the prostate gland and found in semen), glucose, and fructose.'; Is my nightly ritual really causing this?Is masturbation causing my nails to split?
i think so. there was some girl juice (size of a hole punch) on my duvet cover, and i forgot about it b/c that was the only thing that wasn't on my sheets, and after about a week the fabric had been eaten away (like a layer, looked kind of like it had been filed)... also those two certain fingers are a little more i dunno.. they feel different for about a day or two after my girl stays over...

i think if you have some of that hand disinfectant and use that before you go to bed then you'll be fine .. i'm assuming you're doing it before you go to bed, and just leaving your :) on your fingers for an extended amount of time..Is masturbation causing my nails to split?
It's definately not that. Sorry but our vaginal lube isn't that strong otherwise the men you have sex with would have a pretty sore penis after words and all of your panties would have holes in them. It is absolutely not this.
Yeah, its go to be something else then that. Try not doing your self for a while and see whats doing it if you can and see if it helps.
I really don't think that has anything to do with your nails splitting.. Natural nails will split weather you masturbat or not...If you are worried about it being caused by masturbation buy a vibrator and work the crap out of that instead of you fingers... Have fun!
    get a toy!
    Highly unlikely.

What can i do to make my nails stop splitting?

theyve never really done it before untill i became a vegetarian a couple years bak, now there splitting like crazy! i tried sally hansens green tea nail growth, but it doesnt work that well.

what should i do??What can i do to make my nails stop splitting?
    You're not getting enough calcium.

Try drinking soy milk that's high in calcium content. What can i do to make my nails stop splitting?
you can go see a doctor about, it could be a medical condition, or it could just be a result of you becoming a vegetarian that you aren't getting enough nutrients.

What's the remedy to stop finger nails splitting at the ends ?

use a very low numbered abrasive file and file in gently towards the middle ,never saw backwards and forwards.

Keep nails short but smart until they regain their strength, this shouldtake about a month or two.

Keep them moisturised, but dont leave them in water. If you wear gloves todo the washing up, wear cotton ones underneath to soak up the moisture.

Keep hands out of the bath and dry them immediately after washing them.

By some cotton gloves and smother hands in vaseline at bedtimeand wear the gloves during the night, the nails and cuticles and hands will be moisturised by the morning.

Good thing to do with your feet too!

If you toenails are not splitting then its nothing to do withyour diet, but more to do with their enviroment.

Keep them dry but moisturised. Filed short for a month or two. Dont try to grow them until they have got strong. What's the remedy to stop finger nails splitting at the ends ?
The only thing that really works for me, and I've tried everything, is wearing gel or acrylic nails all the time. Other methods work to some degree, but it got to be a full-time job for me, and I got sick of it. Gels and acrylics last a month or more, and the cost is worth it to me because I don't think about my nails anymore. What's the remedy to stop finger nails splitting at the ends ?
YOu need more calcium in your diet.
Try taking a daily vitamin- it'll strenghten your nails and make them grow faster, and also try applying clear polish once every couple days, making sure to coat the ends and tips. Hope this helps!
I have always had a problem with my nails, splitting, not growing, breaking off etc. I ordered Trind off the internet, it has acrylic in it, and it is the best stuff ever!! My nails are long and beautiful now. It is just like having acrylic nails only they are my own. Try some of this and you won't be disappointed....

Advice required re nails prone to splitting ?

I have always had long nails and in June I felt they were getting too long so I cut them down with nail clippers. Ever since then my nails (particularly on my right hand) keep splitting and the splits tend to appear again despite my filing them down.

Can anyone recommend anything to prevent these splits?! It's getting on my nerves now as I am so used to having long nails.

Thanks in advanceAdvice required re nails prone to splitting ?
Firstly, clipping your nails shouldn't usually cause this as its a clean cut so it might be that you need new clippers if yours are getting blunt.

Secondly, when you file your nails you actually tear the nail up a little if you do it all the way across, you should file your nail from the left to the centre and then the right to the centre. Or you could invest in a good glass nail file, its fine enough to be able to file and shape without worrying about direction. They're also extremely long lasting and sanitisable (never use it if you do damage it)

Lastly, make sure you are wearing rubber gloves for washing up etc and use cuticle oil on your cuticles and nail surface at least twice a day. Water causes the nail to swell slightly with can cause microscopic splits, cuticle oil waterproofs your nails slightly and the massaging in of the oil encourages blood flow to the matrix with promotes healthy strong growth.

Start following these tips and your own lovely nails should be back to their former glory in no timeAdvice required re nails prone to splitting ?
Hope you find the answer.wearing false nails tends to weaken original ones and if you hands are always in water that does not help i have tried for years but i have the same problem, but with my work it does not help

I have dry, chipping, splitting nails can anyone recommend a good product?

Nailtique at your local drugstore. Works wonders, and they have different formulas for different problems such as weakness, dullness, dryness, and lack of growth. And you just paint them on as if they were a clear polish.I have dry, chipping, splitting nails can anyone recommend a good product?

  • My nails are weak and splitting after years of using acrylics, nail strenghteners haven't worked. Please help?

After years of using acrylic nails, I dedcided to remove them. They are, of course, weak, brittle and now are splitting down the nail, not across. I've tried several nail strenghteners.. and they don't seem to help. Does anyone have any suggestions? My nails are weak and splitting after years of using acrylics, nail strenghteners haven't worked. Please help?
try using fresh garlic just rub all in and around finger nail might help i used it years ago and my nails have been fine sinceMy nails are weak and splitting after years of using acrylics, nail strenghteners haven't worked. Please help?
I am 26 years old and I wore acrylic nails since I was 16 years old. Mine did the exact same thing. Although it takes forever...I just keep letting mine grow but keeping them short. My nails are still really ridgy but they aren't splitting down the middle anymore and they have gotten alot stronger. they keep looking better. just takes a lil' time.
jello, the answer is eat jello everyday and youll see results, hope u like jello
you need to keep doing what your doing and keep your nails short. you have to have all the weak nails to grow out until you have all new ones.
Try some hair, skin %26amp; nails vitamins. I like GNC's formula. It made my nails grow faster and stonger.

Why do my nails grow great in the summer & are all soft & split the rest of the time?

Your nails are moisturized more so in the summer.. winter months are much more cold and dry which cause splitting. Try a nail creme and keep them manicured.. that should help. Why do my nails grow great in the summer %26amp; are all soft %26amp; split the rest of the time?
Probably because in the summer you get some nutrients from the sun that you are lacking in your diet, you should also try taking calcium supplements and maybe try mineral water. Why do my nails grow great in the summer %26amp; are all soft %26amp; split the rest of the time?
Mine too! But lately I have been using this stuff called 7 day nail growth by nutri-nail and it works wonders! I think the reason why nails are better in the summer is the humidity.
try O P I Nail Envy expensive but really good at strengthening nails
the winter is more dry for u so the summer is more moisterizing
because you are getting vit. a and d from the sometimes sun in this country. Proberbly eating a better diet in the summer too.
I have always believed in the warm summer, your circulation speeds up and hair and nails grow faster.
I think the same happened to me. Well, depends on the seasons and your environments.
in the winter time u must wear gloves that might be a reason........eat healthy foods..

What to do with a dog that enjoys running in the back yard but splits and breaks his nails causing bleeding?

He enjoys being able to run; the problem is he also runs on the concrete driveway that is enclosed in the back yard fencing. This doesn't appear to be the culprit because it has been covered with snow for quite some time and the splitting and bleeding continues. He seems to be in no pain but it would seem he should be. The bleeding will stop but the next time he goes out the cycle is repeated. Is this an infection that causes brittle nails or is he running too hard and should be stopped from enjoying his ';runs';.What to do with a dog that enjoys running in the back yard but splits and breaks his nails causing bleeding?
You need to discuss this with your vet. It isn't normal. He needs a vitamin supplement. Nails shouldn't break that easily. What to do with a dog that enjoys running in the back yard but splits and breaks his nails causing bleeding?
Maybe his nails are too long?...make sure his nails are cut back as low as they can safely be cut and see if your vet or groomer will use the dremel tool on them to make them less sharp and a little shorter. I hope this helps good luck!
His nails are probably really dry..add an oil supplement to his diet.

What vitamins do I take to help weak splitting nails?

Evening Primrose Oil, Calcium, Vitamin C, Betacarotene, Iron, Magnesium etc will all help... but why buy a bottle of each of those when there are pre-mixed vitamin tablets that you can buy?!?

I have one here it's an Australian brand called Herron. The product name is Strong and Healthy Hair, Skin and Nails.

Blackmores is another really good company which do a similar product. I'll put a link in the Source section for you to have a look.

Have a look in your health %26amp; vitamin store or chemist. They will undoubtedly have something to suit. What vitamins do I take to help weak splitting nails?
GNC's womans multi viatmins are good. The only thing is, once you stop taking them you nails go right back to the way they were. So I guess you should figure out what you missingin you day to day diet. What vitamins do I take to help weak splitting nails?
OK, so you heard about the minerals, Calcium, Magnesium, Selenium, and food rich in Silica

and now you want to know some vitamines?

    Hmmmm....

That would be Vitamin A, in case of brittleness, thinness and lack of luster go low on Vitamin C, take Omega Oils and maybe Biotin.
vitamin E, calcium, or the hair, skin, and nail vitamins you can find at any drug store or dollar store.
Drink milk. Like your teeth, your nails need calcium.
    Iron vitamins
pre-natal vitamins. those help strengthen hair and nails, and there even specific formulas for just nails or hair or both.
i have heard taking sea kelp supplements helps this and your hair, too! a friend of mine from school swore by this. hope it helps!!!
check with your doctor first. some vitamins are known to inertact with certain meds. what has worked for me is taking 2 vitamin E's everyday. you may not notice any difference right away but given time your nails will be beautiful and thick and stronger than ever. good luck.
    thats right.. Eat gelatin..
eat more jello. cause weak nails are due to low collagen.
    Use Sally Hansens Age Correct Growth. Its in a pink bottle. If you use it for two weeks, your nails are guaranteed to grow! Happy painting (;
I have long and health nails. The only thing I do is take a multi vitamin every day and keep polish on my nails. I try not to remover my polish to often because nail polish remover will make you nail weak.

    Advice about splitting nails?

My fingernails are really soft. They get to a certain length and then start to peel and split. I used to bite my nails alot when i was younger, could this be a contributing factor? How can i harden them up? Any secrets?Advice about splitting nails?
you can buy some garlic (yes garlic) pills and drink 'em. Also vitamin D. If your not into pills. Just peel a garlic smash it up and rub it. And you can also put your fingernails in olive oil for a while. Every two days you should apply any kind of strengthening nail polish. One layer on top of the other, then once a week take it all off with non-acetone moisturizing nail polish remover and start the same process all over again. Do this for a month! and it will work! :DAdvice about splitting nails?
Calcium I believe helps. Drink plenty milk.
Go to a pharmacy and get yourself some Biotin. It's supposed to help strengthen your nails. Also, wear rubber gloves when you have to wash dishes or anything else that requires you have your hands in water. The water softens them even more and they will tear easily. Last, but not least and certainly not the most comfortable, and possibly annoying to others, tap your fingernails on a solid surface for a few minutes a day. It will feel strange at first, but it gets the circulation going in your fingers and makes your nails harder.

I want to add hurricane ties , the wood is old and splits a lot with nails, do any screws meet the code?

Beach house open walls and ceiling, 55 years old, hurricane ties needed any other suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks!I want to add hurricane ties , the wood is old and splits a lot with nails, do any screws meet the code?
Screws alone will not do the job. If you are putting the ties on every rafter, you can use lighter ties. Look at Simpson H2.5 to connect wall studs to top plates - or Simpson LTSMTS12. Then use a Simpson H5 or A23 or another H2.5 to connect the rafters to the plate - the H2.5 usually needs to be fastened from the exterior. though. You can also rotate an H2.5 or H5 sometimes and fasten to the rafter from the top of the plate, rather than the side of the plate.

Optionally - install a LTS16 or D49 directly from the wall stud to the rafter (if it will reach and if they line up correctly).I want to add hurricane ties , the wood is old and splits a lot with nails, do any screws meet the code?
Amy R is right. Additionally, screws should never be used with straps unless they are specifically made for straps. Take an ordinary drywall screw and hold it in a vise and smack the other end with a hammer. It will snap in half. Do the same with a nail and it will bend - you can bend it numerous times without breaking it. Screws aren't necessarily better or ';stronger'; than nails. Sometimes they're just easier.

Pre-drill with a slightly smaller bit before nailing to avoid splitting the wood. Read the Simpson handbook for other tips.
    These two answers may be right but, they both missed the point, even the ';building inspector';

You said these were hurricane ties and, ';splits with lots of nails'; are you saying it's beyond building material really?

I suggest you get new ties or timbers and, replace them one at a time, rather then try and save them, otherwise your going to have a building that's falling apart whenever the wind blows.
I think you are talking about an older home and replacing the wood isn't an option. If thats the case, I would go with the inspectors hint-- Pre drill slightly smaller holes before nailing. If you feel that they aren't holding in the wood much, you could coat the nails with construction glue before inserting the nails.

  • Why do my nails keep splitting?

I've bitten my nails all my life, but about last year, I stopped biting my nails. They started growing and then every time they grew a little past my fingertip, they'd start splitting. Why do my nails keep splitting?
Put a drop of Castor Oil on each nail and rub it in to the cuticles and the nail. Do this for one week and your nails will not only look better, they will grow nicer. Do this for a month and you will find yourself having to cut your nails because they are growing too long too quickly. Good luck, I hope this works for you as well as it has for me!Why do my nails keep splitting?
It has to do with the fact that you bit them for so long. It will take a long time for them to grow out and get strong. Try getting some of the sally hanson nail conditioning clear polish, or the sally hansen hard as nails, and put it on, it will help make them grow faster and stronger.

Also, make sure you are eating a well-balanced diet,LOL, it will help them grow faster and stronger, especially protein! Good luck, it just takes time (:
I dont know why they do it, but mine do the same thing. go buy yourself some nutri-nail. Not the green one the milky colored one, and follow the directions on the package
They're dry. Get a nail moisturizer. Sally Hansen makes all sortsa stuff for nails.

Not much honey. You have to let them grow out. In the meantime keep them trimmed up and apply a nail fortifier. Also, take your vitamins!I have had to have my acyrlic nails removed, and my nails are now thin and split--what to do?
