Why do my nails keep chipping and splitting?

My nails have always been pretty weak, and I used to work with my hands alot so I never really gave them a chance to grow. But now that I have an office job I was able to get them to grow out a bit to a classy length which I thought looked really nice, but that lasted for about 4.5 weeks and now they are worse then they have ever been. I can't get them to grow without splitting horitonally- layers come off, making them really thin and sharp. My thumb nails also break at the nail bed, much farther then I have EVER cut them and it often hurts (I have used super glue when It was really painful)

I take a calcium, vitamin e, vitamin B, fish oil and vitamin c every morning. I also have been putting on a sally hansen product that is a double duty- base coat and top coat, just to give them some strength.

Is there anything else I can do to get them to grow without splitting?

Could cheap nail polish do this to my nails?

I was putting on sally hansen nail polish and then I switched to a different color made by some unknown company- could that have an effect on my nails?

thanks for your help! Why do my nails keep chipping and splitting?
I didn't know this until i visited my doctors office but your nails reveal a lot about your health. I saw one of those health posters pinned up and weak nails and a bunch of different symptoms mean different things, go get checked up :). Luck! x]Why do my nails keep chipping and splitting?
I would get it checked if I were u.

Paint it clear often and see if they have those nail repair polishes at the drug store near you.

My nails are really healthy but ive always had a problem with splits on the sides?

when i get the splits im forced clip my nail = ( how can i keep them from splittingMy nails are really healthy but ive always had a problem with splits on the sides?
Soak them in mineral oil.My nails are really healthy but ive always had a problem with splits on the sides?
Same is mine do one things file them.
That usually happens when you are filing your nails in both directions, when you use a nail file you have to make sure that you only file in one direction, usually away from you. Otherwise your nails are highly likely to split. Hope that helps.
cut them straight across, never pointed

Nails nails nails... THEY WONT STOP SPLITTING.?

My nails used to be fine but now they keep splitting. It looks like they are layered. Anything i can use arounf the house to fix them up without buying anything because im a bit strapped for cahs at the moment.Nails nails nails... THEY WONT STOP SPLITTING.?
YOu need more iron in your diet also i hear cod liver oil works really good, you can get them in capsules, one a day!!Nails nails nails... THEY WONT STOP SPLITTING.?
Get a nail file and file the base off your nail until smooth and file your nail into a oval shape because this is the toughest most long lasting shape your nails can be square is ok deffo dont have pointed nail shape they will split and break very easily. And get a nail stenghioner (can get cheap ones) and apply once a day.
Try keeping them trim and allow them to grow nice and strong - the longer they are, the more chance they'll split.

You can get strengthening nail polishes for very little money - you just need to know where to look. If you know a place where you can get discount nail polish by good brands, have a look there (could be a pharmacy/drugstore, maybe even a supermarket or little bits and bobs shop). I've got some that didn't cost more than 拢2.

Look here - basically says you can use olive oil to strengthen your nails.

Either get a $3 bottle of nail hardener from Sally's or a $4 bottle of biotin pills. The biotin will strengthen the regrowth.
you need more calcium.

my used to do the same thing, i started drinking more milk and taking calcium pills, and now they're just fine :]]
Put on a silk wrap
Have you been drinking too much pop. You need calcium i your bones. Drink lots of milk and eat cheese and yogurts.

  • My nails keep breaking/splitting?

um, my nails arent like really long or something. it's not too short though, and they are so soft that when i pinch something with the tips of my fingernails, they just break and split. sometimes the nails split like 2 layers, the outer surface just breaks. it's so irritating. please tell me why? um, please dont suggest to me things like using some nail protecting stuff you buy in the market. i wouldnt use them.. just, um, why is this happening? protein defficiency or what?!My nails keep breaking/splitting?
You may have a lack of keratin which is important for healthy hair and nails. It's likely that your diet is lacking in some substances or you have naturally low levels. I would recommend trying Blackmores Hair and Nail vitamins - will take a few weeks to see improvements. Also, treat the nail itself with Dr LeWinn's Revitanail treatment. If it doesn't improve after that, maybe check with your doctor for any deficiencies? Hope that helps :)My nails keep breaking/splitting?
It is more than likely your diet. More protein would help, and for whatever reason I find that chicken in particular helped me. I use to bit my nails a lot and took a while to get them in order without chipping every second and found that they grew fastest, strongest when I had a lot of chicken. If you are a vegetarian and don't eat meat try heavy nuts like cashews. Also woudl help to moisturize your hands, try vaseline hand %26amp; nail hand cream, if you use your hands a lot cleaning or doing dishes.
you should find a Cosmotologist or nail tech that sells a product called NailTek Hydration II. i have the same problem and use this - it works really well! because it is made for the professional trade, it is a bit more expensive, but it works better than anything i tried from a discount store. give it a shot if you can.
Well, I could be not drinking enough milk maybe? Or like, not a good balance of whatever you're eating.

But if you really want that to stop,

get some good nail polish remover and soak your finger tips in them every now and then. It'll help them to be stronger- that, and clear nail polish, if you don't want to paint your nails a different color.
i believe some people just have soft nails. i have incredibly soft nails. to the point where if i put polish on, when i shower it actually peels off! i always have to keep mine short because they'll break if i don't. if i want long nails, i invest in acrylics but i have to have them removed when i'm done because trying to take them off myself rips layers off!
There isnt really a reason unless you have had fake nails on a few times beacuase having them makes your nails thinner and weak. I know you said dont suggest anything but i do recommend sally henson strong nails is arounf 拢4.50 but is worth it, its like a clear pink but doesnt come out any colour. it drys quick and when its dry it doesnt shine and just look like your normal nail. In any store e.g superdrug, asda tesco etc.
I also recommend OPI Nail Envy. Even if you don't like a product you might need one while you work on the getting the diet and care changes to take effect. Plus, use of this clear cover will help the nails to grow strong. They have a sheer and a matte finish for choices. Reapply every couple days.

Keep nails filed, use cuticle cream or oil, moisturize hands after having them in water. Don't bite them!
I have the same problem. I eat Jello %26amp; use ';Bulletproof'; it's a clear coat of fiber threads that make your nails HARD as a ROCK, but it wears off just like nailpolish so be sure 2 reapply every few days or after washing dishes,ect...
Avon has this nail fortifant stuff that really works..you have to put it on twice a day for 5 days(i put it on for a month!)It's really good though...and its clear!(be sure to clean your nails first!)
you need to have a healthy diet, yes more protiens and veggies. believe it or not, your eating habits do affect your hair and nails :(
eww get a nail clipper or something
eat more milk and yogurt, it will br work

How can i grow my nails, they always end up breaking or splitting.?

the only time i've had nice nails is when i was taking prenatal vitamins and they were awesome...so pretty and not flimsy at all...so i suggest you start taking prenatal vitamins, they can't hurt you after all...How can i grow my nails, they always end up breaking or splitting.?
Don't grow your nails. Big nails do not make someone look attractive. How can i grow my nails, they always end up breaking or splitting.?
try using nailpolish all the time
TRY SALLY HANSEN NAIL HARDNER (CLEAR)..... CUT UP FRESH GARLIC INTO TINY CUBES.... DROP THEM IN THE NAIL POLISH ... AND APPLY TO NAILS AT LEAST ONCE A DAY
Vitamin E is said to help strengthen nails and to help in growing hair. Also if you file your nails. Only file in one direction. As filing back and forth will cause them to split.
apply a clear coat of nail polish every 1 or 2 days. thatz wat my sister does.

ps...dont grow them out TOO much. then it will look sorta creepy
nail stregthener, regular manicures, be a bit more careful with them. Good luck!
Sally Hansen Diamond Cuticle %26amp; Nail Creme.

It hardens your nails. Also, try taking Calcium and Biotin. They'll help some.
i have the same problem, when u find your best answer please let me know
use nail strengthner and everytime it breaks

jus fi-l ur nail then put the nail strengthner
you could use nail strengtheners, but if you be careful and just try to grow them as long as possible without biting or breaking them they'll get stronger each time. Try just putting a clear coat of nail polish over them, it works pretty good.
Try either taking calcium supplements or drinking more milk, I had the same problem and calcium helps out a lot! Let me know what worked and how it turned out!

My fingernails are splitting. I have always had long beautiful nails.?

my doctor told me to use more zinc in my diet. I bought pills. They didn't seem to help. I buy expensive creams and polish .

Any help is appreciated. My fingernails are splitting. I have always had long beautiful nails.?
Exposure to water (frequent hand washing, doing dishes, etc.) will dry out nails and cause splitting/peeling. The water rinses away natural oils and the nail absorbs some water causing the nail layers to expand. As the water evaporates, the nail layers contract leading to splitting/peeling. (like paint exposed to the elements)

My nails used to peel constantly so I stopped using a nail clipper and only use a nail file to shape and shorten them. I also started protecting my nails with thicker moisturizers.

I read somewhere that nail clippers can cause the layers of the nail to separate and filing is the best way to go.

I started with Revlon's disposable files made for weak nails. File in one direction only. Start on one side and file towards the middle, then go to the other side and file towards the middle of your nail. Smooth the nail into a squoval that mirrors you cuticle or the shape of the white part of your nail bed.

Finish the edges of the nail with a hindo stone, a smooth ceramic/stone nail file or the finest grit nail file you can find. You want to make the edges really smooth.

Revlon makes a tool that should work. It is a pink half moon shape and you can run it under/across the nail from side to middle.

(I have an old hindo stone but haven't been able to find a replacement at a local store. The Revlon tool might be easier for you to find.)

    (photo of hindo stone http://www.enailsupply.com/browseproduct鈥?/a>

Also, avoid using metal nail files. I recommend using disposable nail files and changing them frequently. The fresher the grit, the less the drag which leads to tearing and peeling.

Some people swear by glass nail files but they can shatter if dropped.

I also use a cuticle balm or nail oil to moisturize my nails and protect them from water since I wash my hands frequently.

    (ex. Solar Oil, OPI Avoplex)

Vit E oil, jojoba oil, Aquaphor Healing Ointment, Vaseline or plain Chapstick will work too.My fingernails are splitting. I have always had long beautiful nails.?
Dip your fingernail is aromic oils.

The usual cause is repeated wetting and drying of the fingernails. This makes them dry and brittle. This is often worse in low humidity and in the winter (dry heat). The best treatment is to apply lotions containing alpha-hydroxy acids or lanolin containing lotions such as ';Elon'; (by the ';Dartmouth'; company) to the nails after soaking nails in water for 5 minutes and after getting the hands wet.

Try to wear gloves when performing household chores that involve getting the hands wet to avoid repeated wetting and drying of the nails. Cotton lined rubber gloves can be purchased in stores.

If soft, consider that the nails may be getting too much moisture or being damaged by chemicals such as detergents, cleaning fluids and nail polish removers (the acetone containing removers are somewhat worse than acetone free). Some feel that once a week application of clear nail prep once a week may help. Nail polishes with nylon fibers in them may add strength.

Be gentle to you nails. Shape and file the nails with a very fine file and round the tips in a gentle curve. Daily filing of snags or irregularities helps to prevent further breakage or splitting. Avoid metal instruments on the nail surface to push back the cuticle. If the nails are ';buffed'; do this in the same direction as the nail grows and not in a ';back and forth'; motion because this can cause nail splitting.

Biotin (a vitamin) taken by mouth is beneficial. Gets the ';Biotin ultra'; 1 mg. size as it also comes as much smaller pills and take 2 or three a day. It takes at least 6 months, but does really help at least 1/3 of the time. Do not take this if you are pregnant. Calcium, colloidal minerals, and/or gelatin don't help consistently.
Soak nails in some warmed olive oil. This is an old, simple and wonderful remedy. Soak for 5-10 min. once a day until you see improvement. Wipe your nails gently with a tissue after treatment.
    take biotin
