Stop thumb nails from splitting?

I like to grow my nails long, and normally paint them with nail shine twice a week and put cuticle oil on the about every 2 days. My nails are generally strong, and don't normally break, but once they get to a certain length my thumb nails always split down the sides. Is there a way to stop them doing this?Stop thumb nails from splitting?
