Agh! No good. I know how that feels for sure. Usually a splitting nail could mean a few things: you aren't getting the proper nutrition to make your nails healthy, you are being too rough on your nails by working with them, or you some combination of the two.

First off, if your nails are longer, this would be a good time to maybe trim them down to where they aren't any longer than your finger tip. I always like to do this after letting my nails grow out for sometime to give them a breather from being too long and me wreaking havoc on them with typing or knocking them against things. Shorter nails are easier to maintain as well.

Once you have shortened your nails and possibly removed any nailpolish, soak them in warm water with some soap for 5-10 min. This will soften your nail a little bit (kind of like they do at the manicurists'). Then dry your hands and put a hand cream (one that you have around the house) on each nail. Rub into the cuticles and your hands.

Then, apply either a topcoat or clear nailpolish to your nails.

Doing something like this for your nails (and yourself) once a week or once every few weeks will help to deminish splitting nails. Like I mentioned, it could mean that your nails are weak, so in the meantime, try to maintain them in the simplest way possible: give yourself a little manicure to help them get stronger.

In the meantime, chew on some foods rich in iron: red meat, cashews, breakfast cereals, oily fish, whole wheat bread, walnuts, beans, etc.

There are lots of different lists out there for iron-enriched foods. That is why pregnant women have such great nails- iron supplements.
