Split Nails : Any Ideas?

My husbands' fingernails frequently split from the top of the nail down to the cuticle. there are quite a lot of vertical ridges on most of the nails as well. Is he deficient in some vitamin? He has reasonable, but not excessive amount of calcium, but wondered if something else might contribute to nail health. Any ideas what to do about this?Split Nails : Any Ideas?
He probably has a fungal infection of the nail. A dermatologist would be the best doctor to diagnose and treat the problem but your G.P. or Internist would be able to also. They are difficult if not impossible to treat with OTC's but there are some new oral medications that work well, you need to take them for several months for a full cure.Split Nails : Any Ideas?
nails like skin reflect your health but i am obviously no expert. however my children have nails which split and my gp told me to give them raw jelly/ Apparently the gelatin or whatever is in it is god for nails. My be an old wives tail but might work...sorry cant help more
its an iron deficiency
Have him eat alot of Jello gelatin. It may help. Sometimes this is hereditary. Other times it could be that what he does for a living could contribute to this problem. My Dad was a combine and tractor mechanic for years. He had the very same thing going on with his nails. Vitamins and jello may help strengthen, but then again they may still split. The tools and repetative use of hands and fingers would cause nails more abuse.
i think you should get a doctor's opinion. that sounds pretty nasty to me(no offense).
i suggest vitamins, mine used to layer all the time until i started taking a daily vitamin, also does he have his hands in chemicals a lot? as i said vitamins and regular filing to keep nicks in the nails at a minimum cause they can contribute also.
If the splints are like tiny white cuts under the nails, then this is called splinter haemorrhages. This could mean he may have infective endocarditis. Check with your doctor
My mother has the same issue, but her problem with only one nail on her left hand. My grandmother has a split nail on the same finger, same hand. They think it's genetic. My mother goes to the nail salon and has an acrylic nail put on to stop her from snagging the nail on fabrics and in her hair. You could buy an at home acrylic kit and put a light layer on each of your husband's problem nails. If he's too much of a manly-man for that, tell him it's a nail coating, not acrylic.
