How do you fix a split finger nail?

My grandfather's fingernail has a split in it. He said he has had this for a couple years. Anyone know how to stop it? Thanks! How do you fix a split finger nail?
You could try rubbing gently into the nail so vitamin e oil - you can poke a small hole in a capsule and do this and use it several times provided you wrap it in some plastic cling wrap or similar to keep the air out.

I would also be inclined to get him to the doctor, its possible he has an underlying fungal infection in his nail bed and a course of oral antifungal medication which is the most effective as versus putting on cream or lotion as it heals from within- may be needed. The doctor will need to do a pathology test to see if there is infection - which is simply clipping a small piece of nail for examination.

You haven't said how it's split (top to bottom or side to side?). As he's had it for couple of years, sounds as if he's had damage to the nail bed which is preventing a new nail to grow. As others have suggested, super-glue will be okay - I've used this on a toenail a few times. His whole nail shouldn't be ';painted'; as, if there isn't a problem with growth - just the same thing with a new nail on that finger , doing the entire nail may seal around the cuticle and it's, of course(!) at tthe base of the nail where new growth begins. Be sure he's taking a multi-vitamin, every day, as well as a calcium supplement.
Ouch! I had a split toenail once and it was painful. What you have to do is keep it as short as you can and cover it with a band-aid or a rubber finger cover. I would go with the band aid just because of the heat. The idea is to keep it covered so as not to rub it or cause yourself any more pain.
I had a split thumb nail from the top to the nail bed and it hurt! My doctor told me to get cocoa butter(you find it in the finger nail stuff area.. like nail scissors and files) you rub it into the cuticle twice a day. .meanwhile.. get some clear 'hard as nails' polish and use it over the one nail. This will seal it until it grows out. What is happening is your grandfather's hands are drying out he need to keep them moisturized daily.

Aveeno is a good lotion it works 24 hours at a time.
Super glue will hold it together, but if he has had it for years, chances are it will remain that way.
I've always heard that you should put super glue on it. I've never tried it myself
