My dog has split his nail?

It is torn at the top of the nail and sometimes bleeds. I think it is quite painful as he slightly limps and licks the area around the nail. I washed it with saline solution what else could I do to help it heal? If its not going to get better soon then i will take him to the vets.My dog has split his nail?
This IS what you need to do, take him to the vet. The vet may amputate the nail and cauterize the quick (the part that is bleeding) and then may bandage the foot to keep the dog from getting after it.

If a nail is split, there really isn't much you can do at home to relieve that pain and the chances that the dog will continue to knock the nail open on a daily basis is huge. The nail stands a great chance of becoming infected as well as continuing to cause the dog great pain.My dog has split his nail?
He could get an infection in it and a vet would give him some antibiotic and cover it up for a short time. My friends dog has just done the same thing. He's a tiny Yorkie (male) and they put a pink bandage on it - he was too embarrassed to come out for his walk!
Take him to a vet now, just in case he needs antibiotics. The vet may even decide to remove the nail, depending in how far up it has split.
you should take him to the vets they will apply some medicine for the pain they will also put something on to cover up you dogs foot to cure the pain

i hope your dog gets better he sounds really sweet X
I would still take him to the vets as he may need a covering antibiotic just in case he gets an infection which is quite likely.

Good Luck
take him to the vets any way as you don't want to get infected as it could put him in more pain then he already is........
