does anyone have any at homes remedies that I could do to prevent infection, or it splitting any further???My dogs nail split, she seems to be in no physical pain, and I don't have the money for a vet bill?
clip it as short as possible without getting the quick and apply some nail strengthener on it ot help prevent more splitting. Keep clipping it to prevent more splitting and watch for any pain or infection. My dogs nail split, she seems to be in no physical pain, and I don't have the money for a vet bill?
If it is split so far back that you are afraid that you may clip into the quick, just cut off what you KNOW will come off with out cutting into the quick. If it is loose you may be able to just pull parts of it off.
It it gets to where it bothers her a lot she will tear it off %26amp; she could hurt herself in doing so. It is best to take her to a groomer who cuts dogs nail all day long. A groomer will probably just charge you about $10 to clip all of her nails. Vets don't have the experience a groomer does %26amp; a Vet will charge you a lot more.
If you do decide to do this your self %26amp; you do cut into the quick just have some corn starch or some form of fine powder to apply to the bleeding nail. It will stop the bleeding. Just leave it on %26amp; the dog will clean it up later.
Did you try to clip your dogs nails and caused them to split? If not, then please, take your dog to a groomer or better yet, a vet and have the nails trimmed properly. I know you said you have no money for a vet, but what would you do if your dog got deathly sick? Would you just let it lay and die because you don't have money for a vet?
I say give this dog up to someone that will give it a better home, and don't get anymore animals until you are ready to become a responsible owner that realizes there is more to owning a pet than feeding it when you remember.
When will people realize dogs/cats/all animals are like babies, in that they cannot speak for themselves and need the best care they are entitled to? It's so sad that people see those cute little faces, are given the animal for nothing, and think that is all there is to owning a pet? Sheeeze......whatever happened to wisdom, knowledge and common sense?
Clip the dog's nail as short as it will go without bleeding. Pour peroxide on it and wait for it to dry. Put crazy glue between the two split pieces and hold together until the bond is formed.
** Only do this if the nail is not split all the way to the pad. Only use a small amount of crazy glue, only enough to hold the split nail together so it doesn't get worse.
A broken or split nail is not a big deal. Trim it as short as you feel comfortable. If you have cut it below the split, that's good. If not, don't worry. Using a nail file or emery board smooth the cut or split ends. If the toe is not bleeding there is very little chance of infection. If there is any blood, stop the bleeding and apply some antibiotic ointment.
My dog did this and i took him to the vets, they weren't able to cut area of the claw off so he had to be sedated in order to removed it totally.
He was then bandaged up with a lovely buster collar for a few weeks.
Most vets do payment plans, call them and ask. If not then i would ask to borrow money from family or sell something of yours that could pay for it to be done.
No money for a vet visit??? You should not have a dog, but since degrading you could possibly hurt the animal my advice would be to call a vet and work out a payment plan. The health of the animal is important to them.
You could try soaking her paw in epsom salts to help prevent infection as well. Keep an eye on her. If it seems to really be bothering her, you may have to take her to a vet.
Yep - cut it off below the split. If you can't do this, you need to take it either to a groomer or the vet.
My vet cut my dogs nails, and I baked her peanut butter cookies.
