when it grows it grows apart and i can cut it low enough to get past the split,any ideas as it gets caught on socksThe nail on my big toe has split down the middle?
Get some surgical tape from the chemists (looks like sticking plaster, but with no pad). Stick it over the whole of your nail and trim it. Never take it off. As the nail grows, trim the nail and the plaster and eventually both will grow out.

Definitely wrap it up so it doesn't get caught on socks while it grows out far enough to cut it past the split. Just be sure to wrap it loosely and change the wrapping often (air it out at night and several times daily) so you don't create a place for an infection. Also, if the split is really far into the nail to the point that your soft under-the-nail skin is exposed, you should see a foot doctor and consider treating it with antibiotic ointments to prevent fungus infection.
Keep a Band -aid over it until it's grown and ready to be cut , in case that you are diabetic go and see the Doctor about to prevent infection.from setting in . Perhaps you need to eat and drink more Calcium and proteins .

Once your toenail has split it will always be split. You cannot fix it. The only thing you can do it either leave it or have it removed. I have the same thing, I have researched it. :(
Get some fuzzy socks because those probably won't get caught in your toenails. Or you can try not wearing socks. You can also try wearing flip-flops! I hope this helps!
go to a foot doctor, they will either somehoe bind it or remove it
Well try putting some petroleum jelly.
Put a plaster on it when you wear socks. That way it won't catch on them.

Use nail glue and then buff it out to smooth it.
Don't wear tight socks just leave you feet kinda loose for a little while.
cut it as low as possible
I would put gause and tape around it or a bandaid.
